This is why we can't have nice things

Something I've seen expats complain about a lot in recent months has been the influx of travelers to Japan. There have been taskforces set up to tackle overtourism issues in various parts of the country, and places like Gion in Kyoto have already cracked down and banned tourists from certain areas.

And, as of yesterday in the media, it seems another one bites the dust.

The Lawson branch in Kawaguchiko has received a ton of attention online over the past year or so, with websites like the Daily Mail publishing articles on how to visit the convenience store back in 2023. Fast forward to 2024, and the store is now having to erect massive mesh barricades blocking the view, thanks to tourists littering and impeding traffic to get their Insta-perfect photo.

I think social media can have some plus sides, but this idea that everything needs to be a photo opportunity for likes and clout is obviously problematic. It makes me wonder what destination is going to be off limits next, and as sad as it is, I think these places are well within their rights to take such steps.

It's a healthy reminder that chasing viral places has real consequences to local communities.
