New Norm, New Habits: Life during COVID in Japan
The COVID-19 doesn’t seem ready to say goodbye soon. It was reported on June 15, 2020 (Monday) that there were 48 new cases of coronavirus in Tokyo, which is the highest figure since early May. This is causing many people to fear a second wave of this dreadful virus.
It’s difficult to say when this pandemic is going to be over. As of now, there’s no medicine or vaccine against it, but we can help prevent infection and spread it by changing our lifestyle. Aside from social distancing and wearing a face mask when going out, here are some additional ‘habits’ that I’ve adapted amid this global crisis.
1. Boosting immune system
Very simple, just eat healthily and exercise. I used to jog around my neighborhood, now I just exercise in the house. I also take some vitamins. It’s important to keep our bodies in shape since people who are sick (or old) have a high chance of catching COVID.
2. Carrying sanitizer and lotion
We sometimes don't have access to soap or water to wash our hands when we go outside; hence, I always make sure I have a sanitizer and moisturizer with me. A doctor told me to always keep my hand moisturizer, because the virus easily attaches to dry skin.
3. Using stairs instead of an elevator
As much as possible, I don’t use the elevator to avoid cramped spaces with other people. I only use it when I’m carrying something heavy. But if not, I use the stairs. It’s a bit tiring, but it’s extra exercise!
4. Exploring wide, open areas
Now that the ‘State of Emergency’ has been lifted and some establishments are now back to business, my husband and I want to take a break from staying indoors and go somewhere other than the supermarket and hyaku-yen shops. Lol
