Creamy Shizuoka Matcha Recipe

Amidst being quarantine or lockdown because of COVID19 pandemic, people have turned to internet trends to ease boredom.

A great example of this―and the inspiration for this recipe ―is the DALGONA COFFEE, which is a popular South Korean creamy Java beverage. Its froth only uses 3 ingredients—instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. You then stir those ingredients with a whisk (or use a mixer) until it becomes very creamy. After that, you serve it on top of cold or warm milk.

When I saw one of the hundreds Dalgona video tutorials and since I still had some of the Shizuoka Green Tea I used for my valentine chocolates, I thought of using it instead of coffee. It turns out I’m not the only one that thought of it.

My creamy matcha

There were few people that tried it not only with green tea, but also with other types of tea and cocoa. Nevertheless, no matter how much they mix it, none of them can get the same froth as instant coffee. Hence, some people start putting egg white or whip cream― and it works!

Here are my ingredients for the cream:

1 tablespoon of green tea (I use Shizuoka Matcha)

1 tablespoon of sugar (I prefer to use brown)

50 ml of whipped cream

Here are the ingredients for the base:

Milk (warm or cold, depends on what you like and how much you want)

Sugar (it’s optional if you still want to make it a bit sweeter)

Procedure:

1. Just mix the green tea, sugar, and whipped cream in a bowl. Use a whisk to create the cream. It’ll take about 5 minutes or more.

2. Prepare your base by pouring milk in a cup.

3. Add the desired amount of sugar or not at all.

4. Put the cream on top by using a spatula.

5. Garnish it with a bit of green tea powder on top

6. Serve and enjoy

It was a little difficult to drink this beverage, so I suggest using a spoon to scoop the cream or mix it together with the milk. I find the cream, sweet, so I did not add that much sugar on my milk. However, my husband said it was a bit bitter, so he was glad that I put sugar on his milk, which balanced the flavor.

Overall, I was happy with the result!

How about you guys? How do you like your green tea? Do you like it simple or are you willing to try this recipe out?
