Pointless Junior High School information session
My third eldest child will start Junior High School in April. As a result, we both had to attend a "School Information Session" at the Junior High School earlier in the week. For my older two children Covid still loomed so their information sessions were to the point and only on for a short period of time. That was not the case this time. We were there for about two and a half hours. And it really didn't need to be that long.
At the previous information sessions I attended, current students of the school didn't participate. But this time, several students participated. For example, the members of the student council did a presentation about the role of the student council. Frankly, it was really bad. I feel awful for saying that, because they made an effort. But it really was a colossal waste of time.
My overall impression of the Junior High School Information session is that it is a waste of time. Apart from a bicycle helmet fitting, everything else was unnecessary. It is a public junior high so its not like the school needs to pitch itself. Furthermore, the vast majority of the, soon to be, new entrants have been at the Junior High School at least twice before as they are invited to the Culture Day and other events at the school. So they are already familiar with the school. Moreover, absolutely everything in the information session is also written in the handbook we were given.
One of the few good things during the pandemic was the reduction in the number of time wasting meetings. I had hoped that they would take the opportunity to permanently change or, even better, get rid of pointless school events like this one. But unfortunately that has not been the case at my children's Junior High School.

My impression of public school 説明会 is that it's just a walk-through of the expectations of parents and kids. I'm sorry you feel it's a waste of time. I teach in a private high school where the pitch, orientation, and demo lessons are essential to attracting students. From what you describe, it sounds like the public schools are in obligatory omotenashi mode.

@TonetoEdo I am probably a bit jaded at the moment as I've had to be at the Junior High School three times in the last two weeks. Plus for my third child I do have a better sense of things. In fairness, I am sure families transitioning to JHS for the first time might get something out of it. But two and a half hours sitting in the same chair was painful, literally and figuratively!!
