The shidarezakura, or weeping cherry blossom trees, are the most immersive of all the different sakura variety. Due to the nature of the long, sweeping branches, the weeping sakura trees create natural tunnels which give you the perspective of a pink petal corridor as you walk.  I have spent more than 20 years capturing the different varieties of cherry blossoms, the most prevalent Somei Yoshino, the wild Yamazakura, and the Shidarezakura among others.  I find myself focused on capturing the weeping sakura more than any of the others.

A location in particular, one of my favorites, has nearly a kilometer of uninterrupted sakura tunnels for you to enter a cherry blossom dreamscape where everything in your view is the pink-petaled sakura blossoms. Yet sometimes chasing the light means letting the light fade so you can enjoy spot illumination as the weeping cherry blossom trees glow in the light and become something akin to dusky, pink clouds ferrying in a dimension seemingly constituted exclusively of sakura.

I never thought I would call Japan my home, but after 20 years I understand the beauty and appeal of Land of the Rising Sun. Part of my affection for Japan stems from my bride, Manami who introduced me to the essence of this magical land. As an amateur historian and sociologist, the uniqueness of Japan’s past captured my heart and soul, bonding me to the society and culture that is now a part of me. This society has embraced me, and I am no longer a visitor, I have recast myself as a cultural hybrid, always updating my identity with the rich cultural information from the past into the present, and, invariably, the future.
