Matcha Au Lait – Green Tea Milk from Shizuoka

Last week while strolling around the supermarket and looking for something new to try for the cold winter season here in Japan, my eyes got stuck at the tea section. Usually I can find only different kind of green teas in that area, that's why I was really surprised to see a pack of Matcha au lait. It sounded very interesting to me, especially as I love milk drinks, so I gave it a try.

Matcha Au Lait or Green tea milk by Mitsui Norin is produced in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture one of the main regions of Japanese tea cultivation. From Shizuoka Prefecture comes almost half of all Japanese green tea. Since my husband is from the neighboring town, I've been very often to Fujieda and had a stroll through the tea plantations there and enjoyed a cup of tea. Since I know the town very well, I was very curious to try something green tea-related from that area.

The package of Matcha Au Lait has 10 sticks full of 100 % matcha powder. You only have to put one stick in a cup of tea and pour over 120 ml of water. Each stick has 12 g of matcha powder. Mix it well and wait one minute till it is ready to drink. You can also drink it cold. Just use the same amount of cold water and mix it well. As it is normal with green tea, the powder does not dissolve completely, but deposits in the cup. Do not worry.  It is not harmful and can be easily drunk without problems.

During the winter season the hot version is really perfect for me. The Matcha au lait is very creamy even without real milk (but it has powdered milk) and the green tea taste is very strong. I have already tried many other Matcha au lait brands, but this one was really the best. It is not watery nor does it have a thin taste.

Also, what is very important for me, there is no sweetness at all in the tea, even though it contains some sugar. You can really enjoy the full power of matcha, which is perfect together with some Japanese sweets like mochi or wagashi.

Also, the price of around 350 Yen for 10 sticks of Matcha au lait is very reasonable and really a must buy.

Are you curious now? Just check out your local supermarket. For sure you can find it there!
