A Treasured Gift: An Old Origami Book from a Japanese Friend
Recently, I received a truly special gift from a Japanese friend – an old origami book filled with timeless designs and intricate folding techniques. As I unwrapped the package, I was immediately drawn to the worn yet well-preserved cover, a sign that this book had been loved and used over the years. Some of the pages were slightly yellowed, giving it a nostalgic charm that made me feel connected to the person who owned it first.
Flipping through the pages, I discovered a variety of traditional and creative origami patterns, from classic cranes and flowers to more intricate designs I had never seen before. Each diagram was carefully illustrated, with handwritten notes in the margins, possibly from the book’s previous owner. It felt like I was not only learning the art of origami but also uncovering a part of someone’s creative journey.
What touched me the most was the thoughtfulness behind the gift. My friend knew I had always admired the art of origami and had taken the time to find something meaningful that resonated with my interests. This wasn’t just a book – it was a bridge between cultures, a way for me to immerse myself deeper into Japanese traditions and craftsmanship.
This beautiful, unexpected gift has not only deepened my appreciation for origami but also strengthened my bond with my friend. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful gifts are those that carry a story, connecting the giver and receiver in a way that words cannot express.

That's awesome your friend shared a classic origami. It looks like the author is Yamaguchi Makoto, the founder of Origami House in Tokyo. Masterworks are crammed into the gallery. Go see when you're in Bunkyo-Ku!
