How to enjoy Tokyo Disneyland as a wheelchair user
Last Christmas I went to Tokyo Disneyland the first time since I started using a wheelchair. I found that the park offers several services for people with disabilities that make it very accessible by wheelchair. In this post I would like to describe them in detail.
Cheaper Tickets
For people with disabilities tickets with a reduced price are available. They are about 20% cheaper than the regular tickets. The tickets are available for the guest with disability plus one accompanying guest. With the current tickets prices you can save quite a lot. In order to enter the park you will have to show your disability certificate. Disability certificates from Japan as well as from other countries are acceptable.
Wheelchair Rental
The park offers wheelchair rental for guests with disabilities. You can rent a regular wheelchair for 500 Yen a day and a motorized wheelchair for 2.000 Yen a day. If you manage your everyday life without mobility aid but you have trouble walking through the park all day this is a nice option.
Special Viewing Area for Parades
There is a special viewing area for people with mobility aids for the parades. Unlike the normal areas this area does not fill up as quickly, so you have a better chance of getting a nice spot. Unfortunately the people accompanying you have to sit behind you so they do not get as good a view. For this service no disability certificate is required.
Disability Service
This service makes attractions more accessible. If you have a disability certificate you can use this service that allows you to spend the waiting time for an attraction somewhere else instead of the line. In order to use this service you first have to register. In order to do that just talk to the staff that handles the priority passes. They will check your certificate and take a photo of you. Then you can reserve the attraction with the Disney park mobile phone app.
This service does not shorten the waiting time, so for example if the current waiting time is one hour you will receive a pass to enter the attraction timed at one hour after you reserved.
Then you can spend the waiting time exploring the park, shopping, enjoying the Disney foods, etc. The only thing you can’t do during the waiting time is ride another attraction. Once the time has come you can enter the attraction just like with a priority pass.
Some attractions regularly have waiting times of several hours, so this service is very useful to enjoy more of the park.
A lot of places in Tokyo are not very accessible by wheelchair so I was quite surprised to see that Disneyland does a lot for their quests with disabilities. If you are a wheelchair user I can recommend the park.
