Base Bread
A convenience store close by recently started selling Base Bread and cookies so I had a closer look at them. Base is a company that makes several food items that are supposed to provide all nutrition that you need. At the convenience store, you can get bread and cookies and on their website, you can also get pasta.
For example purposes let us have a look at the curry bread. It provides 13.5 grams of protein, 3.6 grams of fiber, and several vitamins and minerals. It has around 250 calories.
According to the recommendation from Base, you should eat two pieces for a meal.
If you stick to that recommendation, you get 27 grams of protein and around 40 to 50% of the recommended daily intake for most vitamins and minerals it contains.
At the convenience store, one piece costs 270 Yen so you would end up at around 600 Yen per meal, which is fairly cheap compared to a real meal but expensive compared to other bread options you have at the convenience store.
I tried the curry bread and taste-wise it was rather dry and not close to “normal” curry breads I have eaten so far. I had the feeling I was eating food for astronauts. So this is defiantly not something I would buy for the taste. But considering that getting something nutritious and with enough protein at the convenience store can be a difficult task these breads might be a nice option.
I have also tried the earl grey cookies and they were similarly dry and tasted close to other low-carb cookies I had eaten before.
The base breads are probably a lot healthier than all the other bread options you can get at the convenience store as these usually are filled with sweet fillings and contain a lot of sugar, whereas for the base bread sugar comes up in the latter part of the ingredients list.
As for the price similar to other “health foods” the base breads are not cheap. Also considering the taste this is probably not really something a lot of people want to spend money on.
I think these can be a nice healthier option if you don’t have enough time to get a decent meal and sit down to eat but just want to grab something you can eat on the go. If you are willing to sacrifice the taste and pay the high price to get more nutrition is up to you.
Have you seen or tried the Base breads or cookies already? Please share your experience in the comments.
