The description
Onishi Chicken Rice is made with alpha rice, a form of rice with a long shelf life. The package indicates the product is 260 grams after it is prepared.
The good
You could take this packet camping, but really, it's meant for emergency supply stockpiling at home. The package and contents are well thought out. The product is made from alpha rice, a dried, low-starch prepared rice that is easily rehydrated. The package design works well, too, and preparation requires no utensils. The instructions are simple - open the resealable package, take out the plastic spoon, flavor packet and dessicant. Pour cold or hot water up to the fill line on the inside of the package. Zip it up and wait.
The not so good
I wouldn't use this as camp food but solely as an emergency stockpile item. It's a little pricey, but if you consider the long shelf life - good for five years - and the convenient packaging, then it seems worth it. The flavor packet and dried ingredients in the rice were not that great. It was sort of like cup noodles but with rice. And as far as I could tell, no chickens were harmed in the production of this emergency food. I couldn't find any of the chicken bits that were indicated in the product photo.
