The description

Mizutori started producing geta sandals in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Showa era. As tastes and styles changed, Mizutori produced geta that reflect current trends. The company touts their endorsement by Shizuoka University - research indicates that the gait of sandal wearers is improved by the shaped sole and stimulation of pressure points.

The good

Mizutori geta sandals look as fabulous as they feel. The researchers at Shizuoka University's technology department found that the shape of these geta sandal soles promote excellent posture. The placement of the strap of the sandals creates a pressure point that relieves fatigue. I find that these sandals make me stand very straight and relieve fatigue on my feet and calves. The size range is generous, so I could easily find a few pairs that accommodate my size - 25.5 cm. They're gorgeous, too, with either low or slightly high heel styles and go well with casual clothes. In fact, I wore a pair with a one piece dress to a formal occasion and got lots of compliments.

The not so good

I've had two pairs of the low-heeled version of Mizutori geta sandals. While they look very stylish there are some issues. While the fabric is durable and the height of the thong for my feet is just right, it is so hard to walk in them on stairs. In fact, every ding in these sandals is from negotiating stairs. The wood is curiously both gentle and soft on the feet but also very brittle. I've taken chunks out of the toe and heel edges many times. You also have to walk carefully not to scuff the sandals against each other. If you're cool with wabi-sabi style after a few wearings, these are excellent. But I find that they get dinged far too easily.

We have sandals like this in the Philippines too. I used to wear it before, but it can be difficult to wear it when you are walking on rough surface or the stairs.

@Bella Ah, not unique to Japan, I'm sure! These ones are soooo comfortable but get dinged fast.
