The description

In summer festival periods, Shimamura shops stock yukata, accessories, and usually these geta sandals. You'll find them in the women's clothing section.

The good

For the price, under 1000 yen, they're a fun fashion treat. They're meant to be worn with cheap yukata and obi for festival wear, but they also make great casual sandals. They pair well with casual trousers, jeans, and skirts. I can imagine for guys, they're great with board shorts and trousers. Shimamura stocks a wide variety of sizes. Usually, I find a range from S to LL, but I've also seen LLL sizes. The LL size fits up to 26 cm feet. The geta sandals also have a variety of designs. Last year, I got a demure arrow-patterned strap sandal, and this year I opted for chirimen fabric straps in a floral pattern.

The not so good

These geta have shiny vinyl soles which are surprisingly comfortable even in hot, humid weather, and have a low heel. A few cautions - because the sole is vinyl, they're slippery when they get wet. Be careful in them on rainy days. The geta sandals have a slight heel which makes them grippy on a bicycle pedal, but I wouldn't recommend wearing them for more than a short trip to the shops. Like all geta sandals, they require a little finesse to walk in. I find that to comfortably walk, I scuff. This might be an appealing feature for some people. It's a classic way of walking in geta.
