The description
Sapporo Brewery's Yebisu line of beers includes Creative Brew, a project to create novel beer flavors. Hojicha no Yoin, the aftertaste of roasted green tea, uses top fermented yeast and hojicha in the brewing process.
The good
Sapporo's Yebisu "Creative Brew" is a line of premium malt beers that draw on the sensibilities of younger brewers, producing beers based on Yebisu's brand but with novel flavors and concepts. This beer, Hojicha no Yoin, "aftertaste of roasted green tea" is brewed with top-fermented yeast and hojicha. It pours golden and appears to be a lager-style beer. The aroma is distinctive with caramel and smoky notes from the roasted tea. Sapporo's product website suggests pairing it with foods laden with umami.
The not so good
Sapporo's Yebisu "Creative Brew" Hojicha no Yoin is a nice variation on lager beer. It's worth a try as it's reasonably priced premium malt beer. Thanks to green tea samples and campaigns with City Cost, I got a broad understanding of the kinds and qualities of Japan's green tea production. Hojicha, roasted green tea, has got to be one of my favorite ways to enjoy tea. This beer certainly delivers on the rich aroma of the tea and the flavor comes through. However, the flavor fades quickly. Still, It's a lovely sip.
