The description

To celebrate the Osaka-Kansai Expo, 7-11 convenience stores produce a series of food items from around the world. At a Kanto region 7-11, in recognition of China, is a kanitama onigiri.

The good

Can't make it to Expo 2025 in Osaka? 7-11 convenience stores all over Japan are celebrating various cuisines of the world in honour of the expo. Look out for items labeled with 世界ごはん万博 - sekai gohan banpaku meaning world food expo. The first intallment of the series features items inspired by China, Vietnam, and the US, namely Hawaii. The series started on April 1st. So far, my local Sevvie stocks only Takusan Omusubi Kanitama, a rice ball crammed with a fluffy crab omelet. It's got a delicate sesame aroma.

The not so good

Takusan Omusubi Kanitama, a rice filled with kanitama, is hefty and so is the price at 300 yen after tax. But it's a flavourful novelty to recognize the 2025 Osaka Expo. If you didn't put the rice cooker on (or in my case, didn't have time to put the donabe on the gas ring), maybe this rice ball is for you. Don't know kanitama? Maybe you do if you're from North America where the egg foo young is a common dish in Chinese restaurants. Japan's kanitama is the Japanese-Chinese fusion version, always with crab meat (or imitation crab meat).
