Crab Chawanmushi (Savoury custard)

I love chawanmushi. I would always order it when I ate at Kappasushi, the track sushi near my apartment when I worked in Kiryu. The jiggly custard that tastes like eating soup. It always had a slice of mushroom, a ginkgo seed, and a chunk of chicken I would toss off to the side because I didn't eat chicken then.

Living with my family of five, I cook every day and my meals tend to be a repeat of all the things I can cook. Chawanmushi is not one of them. So when I got a craving for it one day, I found this lovely thing at the store. Crab Chawanmushi (Savoury custard) photo

I had the option of crab, chicken or something else that wasn't appealing, so I went with crab.

It says to peel off the film, then wrap it in plastic before microwaving for a minute. I didn't want to waste plastic, so I just peeled up enough to vent steam. It worked wonderfully.

There was a lot of crab on top, and a very thin slice of mushroom with a bean.

The rest of the cup is just custard. Tasty custard but just custard. For only a hundred yen from the grocery store, it was pretty good even if there wasn't much to it.
