Things I'm excited for in autumn: pumpkin treats

Seasonal eats are one of my favorite things about living in Japan. My home country doesn't really have this concept – obviously there's an element of opting for more cooling foods in summer and heartier foods in winter, but there's not much in the way of seasonal items at precise times of year.

During autumn, I love the plethora of pumpkin-flavored things that start to pop up. I know some of my American expat friends have been disappointed that the pumpkin here is literal pumpkin flavor rather than pumpkin spice, but I've grown to love it.

Pumpkin cheesecakes at a local Niigata cafe last year.

Over the years, some of the places I've noticed selling pumpkin treats include:

  • Convenience stores: these are always my first port of call when looking to satiate any of my seasonal cravings!
  • Beard Papa: they've had pumpkin cream filled choux pastries in the past – I imagine they might do the same this year (there's already a sweet potato one on their website!)
  • Mister Donut and Krispy Kreme: they always seem to have some kind of pumpkin-flavored donut(s) during the autumn season.
  • Coffee shops like Starbucks and Tully's: they're on their sweet potato kick right now, but I anticipate there will likely be something pumpkin themed (whether drinks or food) soon enough.

Are there any places you've found a way to enjoy your pumpkin fix at?
