A uniquely Japanese Easter sweet

Back home, Easter eats and treats typically include things like chocolate eggs (I'm partial to a good Cadbury Creme Egg myself) and hot cross buns, which you can find in abundance at basically every supermarket as soon as Christmas is over. Here in Japan, things are a little different – and I had to chuckle a little when I saw this small "Happy Easter" sticker on a limited-time daifuku at 7-11 this week. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do – so I added it to my basket.

It's not quite the Easter product I'd expect – but I was happy to throw it in my basket for a little seasonal cheer with some Japanese flair!

The daifuku is filled with a pudding-flavored custard cream and some caramel sauce, and I can see now that it does feel Easter-themed. Once you cut it open it's a little reminiscent of an egg, with the white mochi outer and the yellow filling. It also sits in a lovely pastel yellow wrapper, a color I always associate with spring and with the Easter timeframe. Well played, 7-11, well played.

I was skeptical initially, but now I can see how the product really did deliver some Easter vibes!

I think if you like custard-flavored things like I do, you'll enjoy this product a lot. The addition of the caramel sauce added a nice sweet kick, but it didn't overpower the rest of the product. The mochi is perfectly chewy, and it complements the fillings well. I also thought the price point was quite reasonable at 140 yen including tax. I'd happily buy it again if it's still available the next time I'm at 7-11.

A better look at the filling of the mochi, which includes a custard-flavored whipped cream and caramel sauce. Do you think it could pass for an egg?

Overall, I really liked this product. Sure, it wasn't a chocolate egg or a hot cross bun that I may have had my heart set on, but it did evoke those Easter feels – albeit in a very Japanese-inspired way! If you like mochi and custard, I recommend that you check your local 7-11 and grab one for yourself while you can...I don't think they'll be around for too much longer!
