Things I love about winter in Japan: an appreciation for other seasons

I have really tried to put a focus on gratitude in my life during recent months, because I feel that it helps you savor the little things in life. Even when I'm having a bad day, I can typically find something (however small) that there is to be grateful for.

I've been trying to think of things I'm grateful for during winter in Japan, probably because it's one of the seasons I struggle with most here. It's cold, my house never feels fully cozy (insulation...what's that?!), I get sick of the snow, and so forth. It's very easy to get into a negative cycle of thinking about this time of year, and honestly my brain will run away with those thoughts if I let it.

So, one thing I'm grateful for during winter in Japan today is the appreciation it gives me for other seasons. Sure, it may not be the most fun dealing with crazy amounts of snow and overcast days, but I can tell you that it makes spring feel all the more sweet when it arrives. The pops of color from various blooms after the ground has been covered in white for months is so exciting! At this time of year I even start thinking that summers here aren't that bad -- I miss morning and evening walks when the sun isn't at its hottest, I miss the bounty of fresh produce there is to enjoy, I miss the fun atmosphere of summer's festivals.

The colors of spring are something to really appreciate after winters in Niigata!

Sometimes being grateful is about seeing the struggle for what it is and reminding yourself that better days will come!
