Heading back to "granny hobbies"?
I saw an article via the Japan Times this morning, and it was talking about the resurgence of what the writer referred to as "granny hobbies" here. Think things like knitting, crochet, gardening, and so on, and you're on the right track.
The article mentioned that part of this was probably driven from the pandemic, when we were all stuck at home a lot more and finding ways to occupy our time. However, I think a big part of it probably comes from the comfort of it all. The world feels very uncertain at the moment (at least, it does to me), and there's a level of coziness and calm in those granny-esque hobbies.
I've definitely been delving into my calming, crafty hobbies over recent months. I've been an avid scrapbooker for as long as I can remember, and I've been leaning into that. I love that I can get inexpensive supplies at places like Daiso, Seria, and Can-Do, and it's a hobby that I can also do when the weather isn't great outside.
I've also really enjoyed coloring books of late -- I purchased some alcohol markers and coloring books from Amazon Japan and they have been a soothing, granny hobby for days when I just want to focus on something other than the world's doom and gloom.
Are you into any "granny hobbies"? If so, which are your favorites?

I hear you! I also read the article you mention. I wrote about - "TtoE Home Ec: Taking a stab at sashiko" in which I start stitching on scraps with traditional patterns and techniques. It's meditative, productive, and eco-friendly! On the upcoming academic spring break, I'm intending to craft from my stash of Japanese textiles.
