Ornamental cabbages

I visited one of my favorite local shrines in Nagaoka over the past week (Kinpu Shrine), and I really like this place because they have some awesome goshuin and really nicely decorated hanachozu. This wintery one at the moment packed in a variety of color, and one of the things that I liked the most was the use of brassica in the display.

They're also often known as "ornamental cabbages" because, well, that's essentially what they are! I remember my first years in Japan seeing these used in different areas as flowers during the winter months—at the time I found it a little odd, maybe, because they did just look like vegetables growing to me!

Brassica are the white and purple-ish ones that look just like cabbages growing!

These might be something to consider if you have a garden area and enjoy growing things, since they are cold weather plants that do well in wintery conditions.

Do you see ornamental cabbages in hanachozu or used as flowers in your local area?
