Golden Week: A time to declutter and get on top of chores
While plenty of folks travel during the Golden Week break, many others choose to spend their time at home, which is what my family and I will be doing this year. It’s a great opportunity to catch up on to-do list items around the house like spring cleaning and decluttering, and it’s not just me who thinks so!
According to a survey conducted by Ambitious Co., Ltd., about 60% of respondents planned to stay at home during the holiday break, and among those, a significant chunk said that they’d take the opportunity to tackle household chores that are typically left undone.

The survey revealed that approximately 30% of people hoped to use the break to clean, organize, or declutter. The most common tasks included deep cleaning (68.5% in the Kanto region) and sorting through clothing and belongings (63.0%). I definitely need to do the latter with my kid’s summer clothing, to see what still fits from last year, what needs to be retired, and what I need to replace. Other popular activities were organizing storage spaces and washing larger items like bedding.
For many, the challenge lies in finding the time and space to complete those tasks. While most respondents (around 70%) felt they needed a substantial amount of time to clean and declutter, nearly 40% also believed they needed additional space to properly organize their belongings.
Are you doing any decluttering or deep cleaning at home over the Golden Week period? If so, what are the main items on your to-do list? Do you feel like you have too much stuff in your space?
