Under the radar Tokyo 'burb named as one of the world's coolest neighborhoods

Before living in Niigata I was based in Tokyo for four years, and I feel like the urban area has so many excellent neighborhoods to explore. I loved Jimbocho for the book culture, Shimokitazawa for cool vintage threads and a youthful vibe, and Omotesando for the chic, trendy atmosphere it exudes.

Tokyo has a lot of different neighborhoods to explore, and TimeOut's list of the world's coolest ones had an under the radar choice!

TimeOut recently came out with a list of the world's coolest neighborhoods, and only one Japanese spot made the list. It is a part of Tokyo, but admittedly one I'd never paid much attention to -- Gakugeidaigaku. It's a couple of stops down from the much more well-known Nakameguro Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, and it was praised for its relaxed feeling, mom and pop shops, and independent restaurants and bars.

It's not an area I've explored in depth, so I'm hoping the next time I'm in the city I'll dedicate some time to it!

Have you explored Gakugeidaigaku before? Are there any Tokyo neighborhoods you're particularly fond of?

Two come to mind, and I looked at apartment rentals in both - Machiya and Shibamata. Both have "shitamachi" atmospheres, lots of independent izakaya and shops, and they're not far from major Tokyo hubs.
