What kind of building is that in Omiya???
So I’m just minding my own business, taking the Shinkansen down to Tokyo from Niigata, and this gold object catches my eye from the window.
We’re about to pull into Omiya station, and as many times as I’ve been here, I have never noticed this before.
I inspected it closer, and then I saw what it was:
It’s a building shaped like a rocket!
Crazy...Now I have the rest of my train ride to contemplate what the heck that building is all about. Who designed it? Why did s/he design it that way? Is it an office building or an apartment building? How long has it been there?
Can anyone out there tell me why there’s a rocket shaped building near Omiya station???
Hitting the books once again as a Ph.D. student in Niigata Prefecture. Although I've lived in Japan many years, life as a student in this country is a first.

I can tell you it's called ロケットビル - the Rocket Building. (no surprises) I occasionally 'worked' at an international party in a little eikaiwa cafe that was in the Rocket Building. From what I remember there were various businesses inside, like a salon and a bar. If you take a closer look sometime, I recommend the tsukemen from across the street!
