Osaka Dialect for Vegetables
For a few years now, I've lived in the North Osaka area.
While grocery shopping, one of the things I noticed is that some foods go by a slightly different name here. Of course I could understand due to context so it was no problem, but I wonder if other regions in Japan use the same words or have their own dialect for these veggies.
I moved in the fall and noticed the raddishes first. In standard Japanese it's kabu, but here they're called kabura. It's kinda cute.
The next thing that I noticed was a leafy green called shingiku, which is the reading for spring chrysanthemum, as seen below. Here the same food is called kikuna, or chrysanthemum greens. It makes sense to me. I understood exactly what it was.
Recently I saw this sign for a food I don't ever buy, a kind of root vegetable that I've eaten in school lunch soups. It's called satoimo (field potato), but here it's called tsuchi imo (dirt potato), hah. As seen in my neighbor unmanned veggie shop.
There must be more that I haven't really noticed.
I'd love to hear about any locally used food words in your area that differ from standard Japanese.
