Onsen chocolates from Gunma prefecture
My favorite part of having friends that travel is the omiyage they bring back for me. Recently, I was gifted with some Onsen Choco. Unfortunately, I was too excited about the gift to remember where he had visited...
Thankfully, like any good omiyage, the name of the place visited was on the packaging. I guess he went to Gunma. That makes sense since Gunma is famous for its onsen hot springs.
The packaging was just too adorable! There were two different chocolates, separated into a male and female section, much like an actual onsen.
Opening it up, I could see the chocolates better. The male section was a dark chocolate onsen with white chocolate water on top of a cocoa-looking base.
The female section had a cookies and cream flavored onsen with white chocolate water on a dark chocolate base.
I'm not sure who decided which would correspond to which gender. Maybe it means something, or maybe it was completely arbitrary. Who knows...
Again, the packaging was just too adorable! It made it really difficult for me to open and eat! I took a lot of pictures so I could remember it.
Opening the chocolates up from the package, I could see a lot more detail that I didn't realize was originally there. I didn't notice the green tea bamboo backdrop or the individual stones in the chocolate. The more I looked, the more impressed I was by the craftsmanship!
The chocolate was delicious too. It wasn't just about the look and presentation of the chocolate. I enjoyed the different flavor profiles of each bit of chocolate section. Unfortunately, they were both eaten before I realized it...
Forget the onsen. These chocolates are reason enough for me to visit Gunma myself!
