Diabetes type 1

Just found out my mom back home has this has been hospitalized for the past 8 days. I'm so shock because she was always so health conscious. They are threatening to amputate her toe. How could she prevent this? Any health books you can recommend? I'm also worried about my health too.

Well, if you doubt the doctor´s decision, you can always get a second opinion. I'm no doctor, but isn´t Type 1 diabetes the one where the cause is unknown? Like it may be your mother did everything right, but could still get it.

One thing that's interesting to note about this is that diabetics are apparently advised to avoid hot springs (https://www.medicinenet.com/why_cant_people_with_diabetes_go_in_hot_tubs/article.htm) so I have to assume that would extend to onsen facilities, too.

Your "buy it for life" purchases in Japan

There's a reddit community I really enjoy reading called r/buyitforlife. As the name suggests, people outline purchases that they've made that truly stand the test of time. Kitchen items, clothing, shoes, etc... What have been your "buy it for life" items here?

How well does your home country insulate homes compared to here?

One thing I struggle with is the lack of insulation in Japanese homes, with summers often feeling like you're living in a sauna and winters feeling like outside is the same temperature as inside. In saying that, my home country isn't fab with insulation either. They're still very much a nation of single paned windows and minimal stuff in the walls to regulate temperature well. Does your home country do insulation well compared to here?
