What are your recommendations for Furusato Nozei?

This was our first time receiving Furusato Nozei gifts. We placed orders for fresh fruits since they tend to be quite expensive here in Tokyo so we don't tend to buy them often during our regular grocery shopping. Over the years what has been your best experiences while receiving the Furusato Nozei gifts and what are your recommendations?

Born in India and raised in the UAE surrounded by a kaleidoscope of cultures, recently, I packed my bags (and my love for shawarma!) and moved to Japan with the love of my life, embarking on a journey full of new adventures, flavors, and discoveries.

Food is my universal language, and exploring different cuisines is how I connect with the world. Whether it’s savoring a bowl of ramen in a bustling Tokyo alleyway or reminiscing over the taste of homemade pulav, I believe every bite tells a story. To me, food and culture are the ultimate bridges between people, showing us that deep down, we’re all the same.

Through this blog, I hope to share my journey of blending Middle Eastern memories, Indian roots, and Japanese adventures—all served with a side of good vibes and even better food.

Fruit has been a big go-to for us, too. Things that are pricey like good quality shine muscat grapes are a favorite, and peaches. Also, meat options like Hida Beef have also been something we've enjoyed. I'm all for the consumable things that feel like a splurge at the supermarket but feel like we're getting them for free with Furusato Nozei.

@genkidesu These were our exact sentiments too. We've ordered the peaches too. And I'll try the shine muscat grapes next time. Thank you for your recommendations :)

I don't currently earn enough to use it myself, but my Practical Husband only uses Furusato Nozei to regularly order brown rice and "jyobi yasai" which is a stock of veggies like onions, carrots, and potatoes on a monthly subscription. I always remind him that he can buy something indulgent. I suppose he's getting a good value on necessities that are hard to get home without a car.

@helloalissa This is what I was thinking, too - this year's Furusato Nozei is going towards staple foods. I'm also considering doing furusato nozei for produce from a prefecture I used to live in.

@helloalissa That's interesting. I am not familiar with Japanese vegetables yet. I was wondering if we should get a box of mixed veggies so I can try cooking some local delicacies.

Entrance ceremony clothes

Soon my kid will have his entrance ceremony at school, and I'm looking for those typical Japanese style ceremony clothes for myself. I'm 1.80m, not so skinny woman, which has huge problems to even find normal clothes in Japan. Does anybody have the same problem and might have any advice, where to get those ceremony clothes in a taller size?

Places you recommend in your prefecture

Which places of scenic beauty, historic importance, and modernization do you recommend to visitors to your prefecture? I'm not asking for the "top 10" popularly promoted, but your reccos. Maybe places that visitors from abroad and foreign residents aren't aware of.

Making bread, no oven

Do you make bread without a full-fledged oven? How do you do it? What kinds of breada do you recommend to a noob baker without an oven? I have a cheapo toaster oven and a frying pan with a lid and would like to have a go at making yeast breads.
