Historic park with contemporary facilities
Iwatsuki Castle Park has some beautiful cherry blossoms and a popular sakura matsuri each year at the end of March or early April. But the park is much loved and used by locals all year round. There are facilities in and around the park that make it convenient for Iwatsuki residents. The community center in the park serves a really cheap (and popular) lunch! The park is actually split in two by a road with most of the facilities on the opposite side of the road. Such as the community center, a baseball field, exercise equipment and a small playground. But the main playground is on the side with the sakura and picturesque bridge. It is a nice playground and surprisingly large for the type of park that it is in. There is an old train carriage in the park which is open to the public on occasion. The park also has a really nice clock with a Gogatsu Doll in it!

Pleasant stroll on old castle grounds
Not much is left of the original Iwatsuki Castle which was dismantled in the Meiji Restoration. As I discover castle sites in Japan, I like to go visit, and this time went with low expectations. What remains are the moats which now serve as walking paths, and two preserved gates from the original castle. What draws most people to the park is cherry blossom season and waterlilies in summer. The vermilion bridge over the pond hints at the glorious past of the feudal lords and makes for a great photo spot for shooting flowers.
