Some authentic spots, gorgeous gates
Whenever I'm in Yokohama, I buzz through Chinatown to see the gates and the temples, especially Masobyo (Mazu Miao), to get my fortune read. But the Chinatown feels tatty and touristy with a lot of knicknack shops and expensive eateries. I just want a cheap bowl of wonton noodles Hong Kong diner style, but most restaurants are upscale for the tourist market. However, if you do a little research, you'll find some authentic and regional restaurants. For a treat, I'm going to try dim sum next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Overwhelming and over rated
Yokohama Chinatown isn't for everyone. There are thousands of people who are happy to visit it and enjoy it when they are there, but I am not one of them! Probably, because I lived in the area and saw another side of it. For the record, it looks better at night than during the day. Also, I've been to it far too many times without ever finding somewhere outstanding! Honestly, maybe if I'd only ever been to it once or twice, I'd have walked away with a better impression of it. Although, the first few times I visited it, I had a serious case of overwhelm! It is the biggest Chinatown in Japan after all. I would like to revisit it when the Chinese Spring Festival is on though, it looks amazing.

Awesome eats in a fascinating, historical spot
Want a little slice of China while you're in Japan? Look no further than Yokohama Chinatown. It's Japan's largest Chinatown and has so much to offer - you could literally spend a day just exploring the entire area and eating your way through several of the stores there. There are plenty of sit down restaurants if you're after something more formal, but on the occasions we have visited we were happy to just get bits and pieces from places and eat them standing up. One place you can't miss is the store selling nikuman with various fillings - each filling is indicated by a different color panda face. Sure, my panda got a little too much steam (hence the peeling face!) but he was still mighty tasty. Also there was a small store down one of the side streets selling soup dumplings that were so good that we got a second helping. Your tastebuds will thank you!
