Visit now for the Hello Kitty exhibition!
If you have any interest in Hello Kitty/Sanrio or appreciate Japan's kawaii culture, I would definitely recommend heading to the Tokyo National Museum any time from now until February 24th 2025 for the Hello Kitty Exhibition they're hosting. It's the largest variety of Hello Kitty goods ever displayed, and there is so much to see! It's not a cheap exhibition (2000 yen admission) but it was worth every yen.

A trove of treasures
The Tokyo National Museum is a must visit for those interested in Japanese history. It is a literal trove of treasures, including official National Treasures of Japan. It is a one stop shop to get a synopsis of Japan's long and varied past. The 1000 yen entry fee covers the permanent exhibitions, but unfortunately you have to pay an additional fee to visit the visiting / temporary exhibitions. So the cost can add up. The location is great because it is beside several other key attractions including Ueno Zoo and the National Museum of Nature and Science.

Quite a tour
For the admission fee of 1000 yen, you get an impressive tour of plenty of historical items from hundreds and thousands of years ago from Japan. Ranging from ceramics to art, you get a real sense of time travelling back to see what people used to value or what they used back in their daily lives back then. On top of that, there are plenty of cultural items, including plenty of samurai and ninja related things that are often popular with foreign visitors. One thing I would say is that kids might find this place a bit dull, and that is when you take them over to the science museum nearby instead.

Fascinating museum, check the limited-time thematic exhibitions
The Tokyo National Museum is another great spot to check out when in the Ueno area. There are some truly incredible Japanese artifacts on display, including beautiful pieces like folding screens and hanging scrolls -- you can really learn a lot about Japan's culture and history here, which is really cool. The museum also typically has limited-time thematic exhibitions, and I highly recommend checking their website before you visit to see if any of those interest you. General admission for adults is 1000 yen, which I don't think is bad at all given the history and quality of the pieces you can enjoy here.
