A great way to try Japan’s Tororo
Tororo is made from grated yams and is a popular food in Japan and can be added to anything from soba to natto. This restaurant, Toro-Mugi, serves its tororo with rice. You can choose from three flavors: • fish stock (だし) tororo • plum (梅) tororo • spicy pollack roe (明太子) tororo It is served with one of these three selections of rice • wheat (麦もち) • multigrain (雑穀) • rice mixed with a small fish (しそじゃこ). There was about a 20 minute wait at lunchtime on a Sunday. The set menu included a main dish, the tororo and the rice. I found the main dish to be a little small in portion size but second helpings of rice are free for those who are still hungry. The reason I gave 5 stars was because the presentation was lovely, the food was great quality, and the portion size was as reflected in the shop window. This branch is located on the 9th floor of the Takashima Department store at Tachikawa station. Toro-Mugi has many more branches across Japan.
