Shrine on a burial mound with floating flowers
Sakitama shrine is located close to Sakitama Kofun (burial mound) park. So its no surprise the shrine is also on a burial mound. The shrine itself is nothing special to look at, no offense to anyone. But the precincts have an ethereal atmosphere and some additional attractions making the shrine of interest not only to history buffs, but IGers and cat lovers too! The shrine is known for two things (other than its history): cats and floating flowers. There are four resident cats and they have cat motif seal stamps and prayer plaques. And for two weeks each month they adorn the water fonts on the grounds with floating flowers. This shrine is well worth a visit if you are in the area, particularly during the first two weeks of the month when the floral fonts are on display. Don't forget to contribute a yen or two to the prayer box, as a mark of respect!
