Nature insight inside and out
On my visits to this museum, I found that the exhibits were engaging and insightful into the ancient and current environment in Ibaraki Prefecture. A highlight was the flying squirrel exhibit inside the museum. What I enjoyed most was outside on the grounds of the museum. The dragonfly pond is well named. I enjoyed the walk across the marsh to observe the profusion of many species of dragonflies. The museum is great for families, and the gardens, Sugao Marsh bridge are great for solitary walks to experience sights and sounds of a wild place far removed from urban life. It feels timeless.

Great nature museum, especially for dinosaur-loving kids
If you have kids that are obsessed with all things dinosaurs, I highly recommend a visit to the Ibaraki Nature Museum. There are some impressive dinosaur displays, skeletons of other large mammals, sections dedicated to different ecosystems like forests and rivers, and a whole lot more. There is also a lot of info and displays about the geological environment of Ibaraki Prefecture, which is cool from a local knowledge perspective.
