Must visit
Famed for the Sanja Matsuri, Asakusa shrine is one of a group of sacred buildings in the area well worth visiting. Not least because it is designated an Important Cultural Property. It is fascinating to me too that it is one of only two buildings in the area that survived bombing during World War II. Its really busy, no doubt, but it is beautiful.

Beautiful but busy
Asakusa Shrine is a popular (and as a result, often crowded) spot in Tokyo, and is right by Sensoji Temple. I would say it's probably one of the most-visited shrines from tourists to Japan as a result, so if you go during the day expect it to be buzzing – especially so on weekends. For a more tranquil atmosphere I think going after dark is a nice option, when the crowds have thinned out.

Part of Sensoji's story
Legend says that brothers caught a statue of the Buddhist image Kannon in their nets. Their story caught the attention of a wealthy man who built Sensoji to house the statue. The three men are honored at this shrine on the east side of the huge temple. The shrine is among the few at Sensoji to survive wartime air raids. Sanja Matsuri, a huge festival in Taito Ward, starts here. On holidays, you can see the omikoshi portable shrines open to view.
