    Authentic castle, gardens, and views

Iyo Matsuyama Castle in the prefectural capital of Ehime is one of the remaining 12 castles of Japan with an original main keep, preserved stone walls, and fortifications. The castle is on a hill overlooking the city and affords excellent views. Ascending the little mountain is made easier by a ropeway on the east side of the castle park. However, I recommend walking up from the path behind the prefectural office. The route reveals the elegant Ninomaru Historical Garden, impressive stone walls, gates, and turrets. The castle has excellent historical interpretation explaining the castle's construction and fortifications. You can easily spend half a day here soaking up the atmosphere, imagining the castle in its prime, and observing little details. One of my favorite details in the Ninomaru garden is a ceramic jar underground fed by a bamboo pipe creating a tinkling sound.
