    Tranquil and historic

With a history dating back to 1497, Rinsenji Temple in Joetsu is a nice spot for history buffs, and it's home to the grave of Uesugi Kenshin. The path to the grave is scenic and surrounded by a lot of pretty greenery if you visit during spring/summer, which I'd recommend. There is a small entry fee (500 yen for adults, 250 yen for elementary and junior high school students) so just keep that in mind if you plan on visiting. It's not too difficult to access, either - you can get there in 30 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by car from Kasugayama Station on the Myoko Haneuma Line.
