Beach getaway and surf spot

Maebara Beach in Kamogawa, about a kilometer of white sand, is noted as one of Japan's top 100 beaches. It's got a tropical feel with a promenade lined with palm trees. Along the promenade are clean toilets, outdoor showers, and seating. Facing the promenade are lots of surf shops and cafes. In summer, the beach opens to swimmers and surfers. I visited in December and enjoyed the sound of the surf and the chance to stroll while talking to dog walkers. Even in winter, people come down to the beach to play on the sand.
