Living Zen temple
Those pithy words on the signboard in the photo are Zen. If you're deeply curious about Zen or seek a tranquil place to walk and meditate on your own, Engakuji is an ideal spot. The temple is the second most important of the Zen institutions in Kamakura. It's easy to get to. In fact, Kita-Kamakura Station and the train line cut through the garden. The pond on the station's south side is part of the temple complex. The temple complex has about 20 buildings, many active with Zen practitioners and open to the public. Zen practice is held nearly every morning at 6 a.m. and weekly sutra copying sessions. It's a good idea to check the temple calendar and contact them before your visit. https://www.engakuji.or.jp/en/
