Queue for ages for a short ride on Japan's steepest inclination by cable car
Mt Takao is a very popular place to hike, but in Autumn it attracts thousands for the resplendent autumn leaves. The cable car is the most popular way to get to the top of the 599 metre Mt Takao, so its not unusual to have to queue to ride it. However, in Autumn you could actually reach the top by foot quicker than you would by cable car due to the long time you have to wait to actually get on the cable car. The cable car journey is only 6 minutes from Kiyotaki station at the foot of the mountain, to Mt Takao station at the top. The cable car can take about 135 people per ride. At one point of the track there is an incline of 31 degrees, which is the steepest incline, for a cable car to navigate, in the whole of Japan. The scenery on the ride is beautiful, but when the cable car is packed to capacity it is quite hard to see much and even harder to take photos. The cable car itself is very pretty, painted in bright colours that blend well with Autumn foliage, which is probably the most popular time of the year for people to visit Mt Takao. The hours of the cable car are on their website. At a couple of times a year they have special and/or extended hours to meet demand. One such time is New Year's Day when people come to mark the New Year in the famous temple. Generally the cable car starts at 8 am and runs every 15 minutes. The last cable car back down the mountain is between 5.15 pm and 6 pm on weekdays, depending on the season. At weekends it runs up to about 6 pm, but the last cable car is earlier in Winter and half an hour later in April, May, July and August.
