Benzaiten's seaside home
My visitors from abroad have enjoyed a visit to Enoshima Island, and I've shown them around in all seasons. The causeway leads to a lively sando street lined with shops and places to eat. The entire island is dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of water and musical entertainment. There are variety of places connected to her - the shrine pavillions themselves, the caves below the cliffs, and the abyss you cross to get from one side of the island to the other. It's also home to Enoshima Taishi, the Samuel Cocking Garden, the Sea Candle, and the caves. There is real vitality here - in the square in front of the garden, you might catch Edo-era street entertainers, the temple has daily services, and you might see the shrine priests hosting artists and performers. One of my best memories was watching two kimono clad dancers make their prayers in movement at Benzaiten's main shrine.

Love this Island
If the day is sunny and you are looking to go somewhere to see the ocean, Enoshima is an amazing choice. The bridge leading to the island itself builds up the excitement, and at most locations of the island, you are treated by a view and freeing view of the ocean. There is a bit of easy hiking to do, so make sure you are prepared for that. Most foods on the island are also based on those tiny white fish that not everyone like, and it is definitely tough to find vegan friendly food here (we have tried). But as a location, I love Enoshima and will definitely go again.

Family friendly fun
Have to agree with the previous reviewer about Enoshima being an excellent day trip destination. There are so many great spots to visit on the island that warrant separate reviews, including the Enoshima Aquarium and the Samuel Cocking Garden. We find the area very family friendly and there's plenty to do for just about anyone's interests. Spring is a great time to visit.

Perfect for a day trip!
Enoshima is one of my favorite day trip destinations. Aside from the beach shore area, I have visited the Shrine and abyss located in Enoshima Island. It was amazing to see the beautiful sunset from there. Indeed, this island offers a solemn atmosphere.
