Chrysanthemum mannequins!
The Chrysanthemum festival at Yushima Tenjin Shrine isn't as big as others, but it is one place where you can see chrysanthemum mannequins. Which are as freaky as they are cool! The head of a mannequin with the body made up of chrysanthemum flowers. This shrine is particularly famous as a place to pray for entrance exams, as the shrine is dedicated to the God of learning. The plum blossoms are well known too.

Fun spot during plum season
Yushima Tenjin Shrine is one of Tokyo's best known spots for plum blossoms, so if you can time your visit here to coincide with that time of year (February-ish) then you'll be rewarded with plenty of beauty. A convenient thing about the shrine is that it's walkable from Ueno Park, so it's a nice addition to a day trip there.

Shrine for scholarship and plum blossoms
This shrine is dedicated to Heian era scholar and statesman Sugawara no Michizane. Students and academics alike here to get amulets to support their success in studies. The shrine itself was rebuilt to traditional specifications in the 1990s but exudes an ancient atmosphere. The best time to go is for the plum festival in February. The scent and sight of the blossoms are a great relief from the winter cold. When I was there, there was a large crowd and a few talking in hushed voices. It's that breathtaking.
