Reasonably priced with plenty to see
We have visited Tama Zoo on a couple of separate occasions, and enjoyed ourselves each time. I personally loved being able to show my kids the Australia section, a little slice of home, if you will. The zoo is a little hilly, but there are strollers available there if you need to rent one. Admission also is super reasonable, especially when compared to what I'd expect back in Australia. Adults are 600 yen, kids 12 and under are free! Back home we'd be spending in excess of $100 for a day at the zoo, so the prices here are much more pleasant. Please double check before you visit at the moment, though, as I believe the zoo is still closed because of COVID restrictions.

Tama Zoological Park
The Tama Zoo is a little bit far away from the center of Tokyo. You can find it in Hino-Shi west of Tokyo. Right now you need a reservation before you can enter the zoo. Especially on the weekend and during summer holidays it can be very crowded, but the zoo is very spacious, so no big problem. The zoo has diffrent zones like the afrikan or asien zoo, where you can find animals from those continents. The idea is really nice, but many areas are under construction now. There are many animals too see, but especially for kids it can be tiring since you have to walk a lot and the area is also very hilly. I recommend to use one of their shuttle buses from time to time. There are 3 smaller restaurants, which are serving mostly fast food or drinks, not that fancy but enough if you want to fill your stomache. After all the zoo is very nice, especially since they are renewing all right now, but the hilly parts are very tiring especially during the summer season.
