Highly recommend a visit in autumn!
I've been here before as it's a scenic viewpoint that many people visit in the area, but my last visit was in the summer. I highly, highly recommend if you visit here to check it out in the autumn months, as the color is so rich and vibrant - it almost looks like a different place from season to season. Along with the colors of the trees changing there are some silver grass plants that add to the autumnal ambience.

Beautiful views and incredible construction
If you appreciate the beauty of the great outdoors and you're also enthralled by good construction, a visit to the Sagurigawa Dam in Minamiuonuma will tick both of those boxes for you. Whilst the winter months make it impossible to drive up there, the spring, summer and fall are beautiful in the area. The summer months (as pictured) see the area looking lush and green, and the fall months give you a great view of those quintessential changing leaves that are so popular in Japan. There are restroom facilities and vending machines by the top - this is a bit of a local tourist attraction and you'll even see tour buses frequenting the area. One of the other nice things about visiting here is that it won't cost you a cent (sans your car and fuel getting there) and it makes for a pleasant spot to wander around and just take it all in.
