Bulk buys and international eats
There are a number of Costco locations around Japan, but this review specifically pertains to the one in Maebashi. The good part about Costco, and the part that appeals to many expats, is that they have a lot of international eats available. Baked goods, rotisserie chickens, familiar packaged snacks, etc. -- it feels a lot like what you'd expect from Western supermarkets. They also often have people handing out samples so you can try certain things before you buy them. The downside is that a lot of these products are bulk buys only, and if your house is anything like ours you probably don't have a ton of excess space to store big, bulk buys. Our kitchen storage is limited to our floor pantry and a couple of Ikea rolling carts in addition to our smaller than your typical Western sized fridge and freezer, so we can't really stock up on things as much as we'd like to. Recommend visiting during the week whenever you can swing it, as weekends are super hectic.
