Interesting museum in Tokamachi focused on Indian art
I've said it many times, but Niigata is so underrated as an art destination. There are numerous fantastic museums here --both big and small-- dedicated to all types of art, from contemporary to traditional, and from Japan and abroad. The Mithila Museum in Tokamachi is a smaller museum, but what makes it interesting is that it focuses solely on Indian art. There are painted works, sculptures, and more, and I think it's a really cool destination to have in the countryside! If you visit during the summer months, it's under 10 minutes drive from the Tokamachi Ajisai Park, one of my favorite floral destinations in the area. One thing to note -- the displays only have Japanese explanations on them, but I still think it's a nice place to visit simply to appreciate the art for art's sake. Also, they are closed every Tuesday, so keep that in mind if you're planning to visit.
