Sorely missed soba shop
On a recent visit to Kashiwa, I was sad to see that Menshichi, the tiny soba teishoku shop on Kashiwa City's east station street is gone. It was a great place to get cheap and fast eats and a nice chat with the cooks. Go for a stroll and you'll find Shimizu Shokudo south of the main street. Alternatively, on the station's west side, Yanagiya Shokudo. You'll get old-fashioned service and hearty food, just like the old Men Shichi. These old-style shokudo serve set lunch menus that resemble home-cooked meals and fill you up!

500 yen soba lunch
Men Shichi is literally a hole in the wall on Kashiwa’s east side station front street, with counter space for 8 people. The menu is quite extensive for such a small place with curry, soba and tempura. For ¥500 you get a generous helping of soba with greens and wakame and a bowl of kakiage, tempura fritter, bigger than the rice bowl it comes in. On my errands, I have often stopped by for lunch here. Service is fast and the tempura is crispy and golden. Just don’t bring an entire baseball team with you.
