Visit now to enjoy a giant crystal Christmas tree
I feel like the Omotesando area of Tokyo is one of the best places to stroll around in the leadup to Christmas -- there are so many beautiful displays at all of the luxurious stores. If you're passing by the Omotesando Hills complex until Christmas Day this year, I definitely recommend popping in to see the massive (over 8 meters in height) crystal-looking "tree" that they have on display. It also includes light and music displays every 20 minutes.

A scrap of prewar architecture
Omotesando Hills, on the Mori buildings in central Tokyo, shows some sensitivity to the neighborhood. Architect Ando Tadao designed the building in a way that would not stand taller than the zelkova tree avenue and the interior would mimic the slope of the street. A huge issue when the planning and design started was the destruction of the 1927 Dojunkai Aoyama Apartments in the Bauhaus style. The compromise was to preserve the facade. But it gets lost in the long and broad facade of Omotesando Hills. The interior with the sloping stairs is like a second street space. It's worth dropping in.

Cool Architecture
When I am in the area (usually walking towards Yoyogi Park), I like to walk around this little mall. Not that I can afford any of the things sold here, but the architectural design of the mall is really cool. The blocky greyness somehow conveys a sense of classy instead of falling into being prison-like, and going through different levels while not being parallel to the street outside creates an interesting illusion as well. Even if you are not looking to drop down cash on shopping, it is still worth going through.

Fancy mall in Omotesando
If you're walking around Omotesando you're bound to go past Omotesando Hills. This mall is a little fancy for my own personal shopping tastes -- lots of high end brands -- but I think it's cool from a design standpoint. It's the work of Tadao Ando, so if you have any interest in architecture it's cool to check out just from that perspective.
