Making Shizuoka Matcha-Flavored Chocolates

Shizuoka is known for producing high-quality green tea (or matcha) in Japan, so I wanted to try it out to make special matcha-flavored chocolates for my husband this coming Valentine’s Day!

Where to Get the Tea?

I used Amazon to make my search easier and bought 抹茶 お抹茶 お薄 稽古用 お菓子用 料理用に (静岡抹茶70g) - which comes from Shizuoka. It was only 500 yen and it was FREE SHIPPING. In addition, I still had enough Amazon Points at the time of purchase, so I didn’t need to pay using cash. It only took 2 days to get the tea and I really liked the packaging. It didn’t look cheap.

How to Make Matcha-Flavored Chocolates

I got my recipe from youtube:

I chose this recipe because it was very simple and easy to follow. However, instead of using coconuts and fruits, I used varieties of nuts because it’s what we had in our pantry.

Here are the ingredients

8oz of white chocolate

1 ½ tablespoon of matcha

Nuts (peanuts, almond, and cashew nuts)

Process

1. First, I melted the white chocolate. I did this by putting my bowl of chocolates under warm water. I then mixed it until it smooth.

2. Next, I added the matcha and mixed it until there were no more clumps.

3. I then put the nuts in and mixed again.

4. After that, I spread the mixture in a tray with wax paper. Using my spatula, I tried to distribute the melted chocolate in the tray.

5. I added more nuts for design.

6. I put in the fridge to solidify.

7. Once it had hardened, I warmed up a knife to easily cut the chocolate in bite-sized pieces.

8. Then I wrapped them, put them in a box and waited for my husband to taste (lol).

Verdict

I really liked this recipe. I’m good at cooking (according to my husband), but I’m not very good at making pastries or desserts like this. However, this one is very easy to do, plus the ingredients are not a hassle to prepare. So, if you have limited time to make chocolates for Valentine’s, I highly recommend this recipe for Shizuoka matcha-flavored chocolates.

In addition, I like the Shizuoka matcha that I have chosen. It was really good with white chocolate. The hint of bitterness from it counters the sweetness of the chocolate, which I really love! And, it was affordable and tasted quite good compared to green tea I have bought in supermarkets.
