Japanese Protein Powder
In order to improve the results of my muscle building workouts, I recently started to use protein powder. So far I have tried two different versions from the Meiji protein powder brand Savas.
The first one I tried is this weight down protein powder in yoghurt flavour. Compared to other powders I had looked at this one is very high in protein content and low in fat and carb content.
It is made of soy protein which gives it an interesting taste. I found it was easy to dissolve in milk. I personally like putting protein powder in my oatmeal or mixing it into my yoghurt better than making protein shakes, though and this powder is not the best option for mixing with yoghurt. It worked fine for the oatmeal.
The second one I tried is this matcha-flavoured protein powder for muscle growth. This has a little less protein and a little more carbs and fat compared to the yoghurt-flavoured one and is made of Whey protein. I found that this powder is good for mixing with yoghurt or oatmeal, but it forms lumps if you dissolve it in milk. The matcha taste is quite nice and can turn your plain yoghurt into a matcha yoghurt.
The Savas protein comes in bags of 1,050g which are around 4,000 yen and bins of 315g that are around 2,000 yen each. I found the bins are more convenient for storage. Both come with a measuring spoon.
Besides the above-mentioned flavours, so far I have also seen a banana, cacao, chocolate, berry and vanilla. You can get them on amazon or places that sell workout and fitness equipment, like Don Quijote or Yodobashi Camera.
So far I am quite satisfied and might try other flavours in the future. If you consider trying out protein shakes don’t increase your protein intake too rapidly as that might upset your stomach.
Also, when choosing a protein powder I like to take a closer look at the nutrition tables. There is a lot of protein powder on the Japanese market that contains quite a lot of sugar. For some reason that is mostly the case for protein shakes targeted at women who are trying to lose weight.
The Savas protein is sugar-free but does use artificial sweetener so if you want to be on the safe side, you should probably try to look for plain protein powder without any flavours.
