Japanese Halloween Foods in 2020

Even though Halloween season is considered to be in October, you could find Halloween sweets and dishes from September already, in Japan. I want to introduce three Halloween dishes and sweets I have tried so far.

Halloween Wagashi from Chateraise

The sweets shop Chateraise is selling three kinds of Halloween wagashi this year -- a Frankenstein head, a black cat and a Jack-o-lantern.  All are filled with different versions of anko. The Frankenstein is filled with regular anko, the Jack-o-Lantern with pumpkin anko and the Cat with white anko. You can purchase them at all Chateraise shops and if they are not in stock at the moment the shop can order them for you. Chateraise has shops all over Japan.

The wagashi are small so you can easily eat 2 or 3 for dessert or as a snack. Ideally, you have some Green Tea to enjoy them with. If you don’t like wagashi, Chateraise also has several Halloween themed cakes and cookies.

Halloween Dessert from the All C´s Café

Just like every year, the All C´s Café in Koenji, Tokyo, is offering a Halloween dessert. This year it is a Halloween parfait. The parfait is available in September and October. It is topped with cookies, caramelized pumpkin slices, and pumpkin and caramel ice cream. Below that there are several different kinds of corn flakes and pieces of sponge cake. The Halloween parfait is not small, but it is manageable as a dessert if you choose only a light meal for your main dish. But sharing with a friend is also a nice idea.

C´s Café also has a Halloween-themed hamburger meal for the complete Halloween experience and their poodle cakes that are on the regular menu come with cute little Halloween add-ons during the Halloween season.

The café interior is decorated with several Halloween items also, so you can enjoy your meal in the right atmosphere and take some nice pictures.

The café requests all customers to order at least one drink so take that into consideration when visiting.

Halloween Menu at the Pokémon Café

Of course, there also is a special Halloween menu at the Pokémon Café. It is available from September 26 to November 8. This year there is only one menu item, unlike last year when you had a few to choose from. This year’s Halloween menu at the Pokémon Café is a set consisting of a cheese doria and fruit juice. The cheese doria is arranged to look like Mimikyu and is very cute, however, I didn't really see anything "Halloween" on the plate. The juice with its orange and purple colours felt a little more like Halloween.

Nevertheless, the taste was good, and you get a mask case aa present when ordering the dish.

Still, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of variety and having to choose a whole set instead of ordering single items. Also, the Pokémon Café was not decorated for Halloween unlike in the last two years when they had used plushies from the recent Halloween collection as decoration.

Have you found any nice Halloween themed dishes in Japan so far? Are you planning to eat some this month?
